Did you know some wedding DJs and suppliers would prefer you not to meet your DJ?
Most wedding DJ agencies and wedding venue resident DJs don’t want to meet you! There I said it!
Why would a wedding DJ not want to meet you? Usually it boils down to profits!
In any business time is money. if you were to meet an agency placed DJ they would have to pay them for the meeting and this would reduce profit margins. Meetings are already factored in to my costs and, as I’ll explain, are intrinsic to my way of doing business.
Most residences are also taken by agencies. This lack of competition can result in complacency and a “one size fits all” philosophy. What is often referred to as a McWedding where everyone gets exactly the same (plus or minus pickles).
Naturally many suppliers will want to do what is most convenient for themselves and use their tried and trusted procedures but this in turn can make things a little bit repetitive and stale! I want every wedding to be fun and unique, and personal to my couples!
Of course, some DJs are just not great at meeting people – they are often those who prefer playing the music rather than dancing and socialising! This type will prefer to do everything via online forms and emails with brochures etc – anything rather than actually speak to you.
So why should you meet your wedding DJ?
If you don’t meet your actual DJ you have no idea if you get along with them! It’s a long time to spend with someone you don’t gel with. Meeting the agent is fine, and they may be lovely, but it’s not really the same is it? You wouldn’t buy your dress because an agent told you it was really nice without trying it on first. Most people go for tasting sessions for their food and cake too.
Try to meet your actual DJ so that you have a rapport before your event and ideally have spoken to them several times.
My meetings
My best events are always when I feel like a friend of the couple and I’m just there to help the day run along smoothly in a stress-free relaxed fashion. I couldn’t possibly do this without meeting the couple beforehand. In fact I usually have two meetings and I’m available at any time to chat about everything to do with your wedding – feel free to use me as a resource.
Of course, I could play just some great tunes and fill the dancefloor but then it becomes just the same as any other party and not a wedding reception. Even if I play the ones you have chosen and sent to me, without the proper thought, it might not appeal to all of your wedding guests. I could introduce “ladies and gentlemen please be upstanding for the bride and groom” like at every wedding venue “factory” but my introductions aren’t like that, they are much more personal. I will be comfortable calling you by your first names and I will know you as people I have met and spoken with at length about your wedding.
At our first meeting, I will give you some great advice on how to choose music for each part of your wedding and how to get some dancing requests from your guests – NEVER ask for their favourite song! Ask for songs they will dance to!
At our second meeting we go through each step of your wedding day agenda so that we all know our expectations for the day itself. I don’t like to leave anything to chance and creating a relaxing, stress-free day involves lots of preparation and experience of many wedddings.
What should you expect?
Wedding music is a huge part of creating memories and your music should remind your guests of you, and remind you of them. My couples always have some idea of how I will structure of their evening. They know how the party will flow, with a journey through eras and genres. Touching on all those memories along the way, varying volume, tempo and energy to create an atmosphere that ends with a full dancefloor at the end of the wedding celebration.
