As a professional wedding DJ and Master of Ceremonies with over a decade of experience, I’m often asked if it’s possible to do your own wedding music with just an iPod or Spotify etc. The answer is, of course, yes. However, there are a few reasons why you should consider hiring a professional DJ over a DIY playlist before making that decision.
Sound
Firstly, you’ll need access to professional sound equipment. A home system simply won’t cut it for a wedding, and you’ll need expensive higher-end equipment to ensure the sound quality is great. Most people don’t realise how tiring it is to listen to speakers being played above their capabilities. Your ears become jaded and it can make you irritable. I’ve left events early because without understanding why, until I discovered this. The cost of hiring professional sound equipment may be similar or even more expensive than hiring a DJ. You will then have the added bother of setting it all up and returning it to the hire company. There’s also a deposit to pay and damages if you have an accident.
Lighting
Secondly there is the question of lighting. This is very rarely considered, in fact even many DJs know little about the subject. They say “no-one dances to lighting” but if it weren’t important why would every concert have lightshows? Lighting can create atmosphere, energy and excitement. We’ve all been to events when the bad lighting is manic and shining in everyone’s eyes. People move out of the room. High-end controlled, intelligent lighting will match perfectly with your music and can be adjusted on the fly to match the tone of songs and your colour scheme. Stress-free
Thirdly, do you really want to be bothered with the added stress in the busy weeks leading up to your wedding and on the day itself? A good wedding DJ will consult with you on your musical tastes and those of your guests. I construct the day and evening with your likes and dislikes in mind. I respond to requests and changes in the room and energy of the dancefloor. Giving everyone chance of a breather is sadly underrated. A professional wedding DJ knows that the secret to a great party is not keeping the same group of people dancing all night but to play something for everyone.
What happens if your choices bomb? A DIY list cannot respond but experience is what gets me out of those situations, I’ll quickly move onto the next track or change genre. Playing the right song at the right time based on who is dancing is a key skill. It’s not all about just pressing a button. Part of my service is to help advise you on what works and when to play certain styles.
Announcements
Lastly, can all the necessary introductions and transitions still be made effectively? A great microphone and good technique are required. I lower the music and make important announcements throughout the day and evening – introducing you into the room, cutting the cake, first dance, bouquet toss, and last dance. While you may not want or need all of these, it’s always useful to keep guests informed of the agenda so they don’t miss any important moments. All announcements are not the same, I have a “performance voice”, people stop and take notice of what I say, and I take care not to be repetitive, too formal or stuffy.
